  • Description: Student will look at the method for pricing textbooks and other materials. Although most prealgebra books have increases computed by taking a percent of the whole and adding it to the original cost to determine price, that is not how it is actually determined.Students will look at the method for pricing textbooks and other materials.
  • Implementation notes: (follow up/discussion questions, pedagogical recommendations, etc.):
    • Assuming your textbooks had a 25% mark-up, reference materials had a 40% mark-up and supplies such as paper, pens etc had a 50% mark-up, how much of the cost of your books and supplies for this semester went to supporting the bookstore?
    • Students can research the mark-up used by stores in their area on items of interest.
